Hi I'm Drishti — I work hard (the good ol’ 9-5 grind) and I travel hardest. My days are a blur of emails, engineering stuff, and deadlines, fueled by caffeine.

But my passion for luxury travel, fine dining, and unique experiences gets me excited with each rising sun.

Why is Plaka A Must Visit In Athens?

The neoclassical Plaka district is a very charming neighborhood of Athens, nestled at the foot of the Acropolis. This is where all the action is - It’s vibrant, lively, full of culture, and represents the modern way of Greek life. Everywhere you look in this lively Athens neighborhood, there's something captivating which leaves you craving more and making it a MUST-SEE in Athens.

How To Get To Plaka?

Plaka is about a 10-15 min walk from Monastiraki square. The walk is relatively easy and pedestrian friendly through Ermou street, offering some good retail therapy opportunities, just saying! There are other ways of getting here such as metro or taxi depending on your location - Google Maps will be your best friend!

What To See And Do In Plaka?

If you think the time machine is not real, go to Plaka - it is packed with history! There are ancient ruins scattered throughout the neighborhood (even from the Roman era). The Museum of Greek Folk Art and the Frissiras Museum are just a couple of the cultural institutions that will leave you with insights into Greek heritage and contemporary art.

But DON’T RUSH…My best advice is to stroll aimlessly as you explore Plaka and you are guaranteed to find hidden gems and treasures along the way.

There's one Church called the Church of Metamorphosis which is quite famous and worth checking out as a must-see in Plaka, Athens.

The Mnisikleous Street Stairs with people sitting, eating, and exploring at night.

And oh, the beautiful Plaka stairs!

The Plaka Stairs, also known as the Mnisikleous Street Stairs, are located on the northeast side of the Acropolis hill.

These stairs lead to the picturesque neighborhood of Anafiotika (beautiful just like the Cyclades islands).

The stairs are a popular spot for both locals and tourists exploring Plaka, with a variety of dining options. Many restaurants and cafes sparkle the stairs, perfect for enjoying a coffee in the morning or ouzo in the evening. There are rumors of them being 3,000 years old, how cool is that?

Plaka district is an experience in itself, with its beautiful winding streets lined with charming shops selling everything from souvenirs to high-quality local crafts, you can find authentic Greek products.

People in Athens are very welcoming and friendly, so make sure to always smile and greet them with a “Yasas” (pronounced yaa-saas), which means hello.

Pro tip: Monastiraki square is much cheaper than Plaka when it comes to buying souvenirs, hats, linens, etc. The paper hat I am wearing in these pictures cost me €25 in Plaka and I saw the same hat for €15 in Monastiraki.

How Long Should You Spend Here?

You can spend as much time as you want here and you will still see and notice things for the first time.

If you have enough time in Athens, spend an entire day here but if you are crammed up with your itinerary, 4-5 hours will give you a good feel of the neighborhood.

Cost of Visiting Plaka

The cost of visiting Plaka can vary depending on your choices and shopping habits.

Entrance fees for museums and archaeological sites are generally affordable, and there are combined tickets available for multiple attractions at a good deal.

Shopping can range from inexpensive souvenirs to more costly, authentic art pieces so budget accordingly to make the most of your experience there.

Where to Wine and Dine in Plaka?

Plaka is filled with amazing dining options, from small cafes to traditional tavernas. For a meal with a view, go to a spot with a view of the Acropolis during sunset. My personal favorite is the Cave of Acropolis - this is where I had some of the best Greek food in Athens.

Don’t forget to try their Saganaki, it’s the best I had in Greece. I went to the restaurant during peak summer hours and did not need a reservation (literally stumbled upon this place while exploring).

If you order a drink, an appetizer, and a main, it will run you about €50 per person.

You truly find the best authentic spots when you don’t follow the crowds or overhyped places 😉.

Where to Stay in Plaka?

My personal recommendation is to stay near Monastiraki square which is located in the heart of Athens. But, if you want to stay in Plaka, Athens (it’s pretty safe), there are a range of accommodation options, from hotels to airbnb’s. You might even find a place with a private balcony view of the Acropolis, make sure to book in advance.

Other Helpful Tips

If you visit during the off-peak season, such as October or the winter months, you'll enjoy the neighborhood with fewer crowds.

Take the time to explore beyond the main streets to discover quieter corners and less frequented shops.

Check local listings for any festivals or events happening in Plaka when you visit (or ask your hotel/airbnb host), as these can offer a deeper and authentic connection to Greek culture.

Plaka is not just a tourist place, but a living, breathing part of Athens with a very rich history and a vibrant present. Plaka is a MUST VISIT and will leave you with a lasting impression.
